LEARNING UNIT 2.4 – TEACHING PLAN – GETTING THINGS DONE: MISSION

The teacher explains that in this lesson the class will start with their own case of problem-solving. Then, they will go into detail, so there will be several lessons dedicated to this topic, and they will be following the before-presented steps. During this lesson, they will present their mission to class (showing slide 2 of the ppt**).

** The ppt is an attachment to this learning unit.

MAIN PART (35 minutes):

The teacher divides pupils alphabetically into groups with 3-5 members (this is to ensure diverse teams of mixed abilities, skills and attitudes).

Show the short video given in an appendix and available to understand the crisis “Asteroid Hitting Earth on Valentines Day 2046?!” On slide 3 of PPT

The teams are first given 5 minutes to discuss the crisis.

Before teams start work, teacher reminds them this is a serious task they will be working on during several lessons, therefore, they should think and choose wisely. The problem should be a real-life one with real-life solutions.

The pupils then have 10 minutes to carry out quick search about selected crisis, after which they have 10 minutes to discuss the findings, write down key questions, and provide answers to:

What are some of the core problems this crisis presents?

What aspect of the crisis did they decide to address?

        Why did thye choose it?

        What is your mission?

If the pupils are unable to come up with problems caused by the crisis, the teacher should offer a few suggestions:

Lack of food in the area/country

        Temperature changes/ global warming

        New diseases

        New materials

We can learn new things about the start of the universe

All the teams are given an A3 piece of paper (or even better, a piece of sheet from a flipchart) to nodge down their questions, and identified problems After 20 minutes, each team presents its findings to the class. The A3 papers can remain on the wall as a reminder throughout the lessons.

During this stage, the pupils should come up with the following:

What are some of the core problems this crisis presents?

What aspect of the crisis did they decide to address?

        Why did they choose it?

        What is your mission?

ASSESSMENT (5 minutes):

The teacher comments on pupils’ work and encourages them to think about the topic they chose to get a better understanding of the problems of the crisis before they start working on the next step of the problem identification process in the following session.
