IMMERSIVE LEARNING: SCIENCE DAY – VISITING A FABLAB

GUIDELINES ON HOW TO ORGANIZE A FABLAB VISIT

The teacher should keep in mind that they need to manage the visit and the transportation the chosen FabLab – this takes some basic organizational and time management skills.

 

HOW TO FIND A FABLAB?

 

The teachers can contact a FabLab they already know, or browse the Fablab network of Slovenia:  http://fablab.si/

 

A SAMPLE PLAN OF THE VISIT*

 

* While you can find a sample plan of the visit below, the result of the visit will be best if the teachers discuss with the chosen FabLab what the FabLab can offer in terms of the technology and presentation. The FabLab might have a good program already prepared or has to offer other great options for activities not included in the proposed sample plan.

 

The visit will be guided by the FabLab staff.

 

1)     Introduction

·       Introduction to the Fablab and explanation of what it is

·       Safety guidelines for working with machinery and equipment

2)     Tour of the Fablab

·       Guided tour of the lab, explaining the different types of machinery and tools available

·       Brief demonstration of how some of the machinery and tools work

3)     Hands-on Activities

·       Participants will have the opportunity to use various machinery and tools to create a project

·       Possible projects could include creating a keychain using a laser cutter, making a simple electronic circuit, or designing a 3D-printed object

4)     Science and Engineering Principles

·       Discussion of the scientific and engineering principles involved in the projects created

·       Explanation of how the machinery and tools used in the Fablab work and their underlying scientific principles, using age-appropriate language and examples

·       Discussion of the engineering design process and how it is used in creating projects at the Fablab

5)     Conclusion

·       Recap of the day’s activities and what was learned

·       Information on how to continue learning and using the Fablab’s resources, with suggestions for age-appropriate projects to try at home

·       Q&A session to answer any remaining questions or concerns, with an emphasis on encouraging curiosity and exploration.
